Airbag injury

Airbags are supposed to keep us safe but studies show that airbags can cause everything from tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and deafness to brain damage and bone fractures. Airbags deploy at nearly 200 m.p.h., slamming drivers and passengers back against their seats during auto accidents. In addition, airbag deployment causes an earsplitting bang that, at over 170 decibels, can sound like a shotgun, often leaving driver and passenger ears traumatized with otologic (ear) damage. Whether your airbag deployed in a rear-end accident, a head-on crash or a rollover, many airbag injuries can occur, including:

  • Permanent hearing loss
  • Incessant ringing, roaring or buzzing, known as tinnitus
  • Head trauma
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Rib fracture
  • Broken nose
  • Broken fingers, hands or arms
  • Facial lacerations
  • Skin damage
  • Eye injury
  • Airbag death

Tinnitus/Hearing Loss

Tinnitus, also called a constant ringing in the ears, is a uniquely devastating and life-altering condition. It can become all-consuming, distracting victims from their work, making it impossible to concentrate, and disrupting everyday activities such as conversation, listening to music or the simple act of trying to enjoy some peace and quiet. Over time it can cause psychological distress, due to the endless irritation of any number intermittent or continuous sounds:

  • High-pitched ringing
  • Low, ceaseless roaring
  • Incessant buzzing
  • Tapping or tinkling sounds
  • Relentless hissing
  • Partial or total hearing loss
  • Your own pulse (heartbeat)
  • Sound of breathing amplified

According to the Mayo Clinic, the medical cause of tinnitus is inner ear cell damage, when the tiny hairs deep inside the ear are broken or bent, causing electrical impulses to be randomly leaked into the brain in the form of sound. There are many medical or natural causes of tinnitus, from earwax blocking the ear canal to inner ear tumors to presbycusis (age-related hearing loss). There are numerous environmental factors that can damage the ears enough to cause severe tinnitus, sentencing some victims to an existence filled with either non-stop noise or, eventually, no hearing at all. The Mayo Clinic cites many dangerous conditions, products and activities that can result in tinnitus, including:

  • Loud airbag deployment boom
  • Heavy equipment such as chainsaws
  • Pneumatic tools, including nail guns
  • Roaring factory assembly line machines
  • MP3s and iPods with earbuds or headphones
  • Ear-splitting live concerts
  • Car accident head or neck injuries
  • Dangerous medicines

Regardless of the cause of your tinnitus or hearing loss, we can fight for your rights and go after the negligent airbag manufacturer, product maker, distracted driver, even an employer who doesn't provide enough on-the-job ear-protection.
